Explosive Mount Kanlaon Eruption Ignites Grassfire

The Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the Philippines erupted on Tuesday, April 8, accompanied by 14 volcanic earthquakes, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to issue a Level 3 alert.

Under such an alert, residents within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit are recommended to evacuate.

According PHIVOLCS, smoke from the volcano reached heights of 4,000 meters and ashfall was expected in the nearby cities of Barangays Cubay, San Miguel, and La Granja, and La Carlota.

A grassfire was ignited at the eastern slopes of the volcano after superheated ballistic fragments were thrown out of the crater, PHIVOLCS said.

“Residents were also warned of possible hazards such as sudden explosive eruption, lava flow, ash fall, rockfall, lahar during heavy rains, and pyroclastic flow,” wrote the Inquirer, citing PHIVOLCS. Credit: Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology via Storyful
