The revival of the once-extinct dire wolf species has everyone saying the same thing on social media.
Namely, people are wondering which animals will be brought back to life next. The dodo? The dinosaurs? And many people see shades of Jurassic Park.
“We’re Colossal Biosciences, the de-extinction company responsible for bringing back the first animals from extinction. Our dire wolf pups, Romulus and Remus, were born on October 1, 2024,” the company wrote on X. According to CNN, the dire wolf died out 12,500 years ago.
“These two wolves were returned from extinction using genetic edits derived from a complete dire wolf genome, meticulously reconstructed from ancient DNA found in fossils dating back 11,500 and 72,000 years.”
Tyler Winklevoss wrote on X, “Jurassic Park here we come! Congratulations to the @colossal team on successfully de-extincting the dire wolf. Can’t wait to see what’s next!”
“Bring back the Wooly Mammoth,” another person wrote.
“Wait. We WANT Jurassic Park?” another wrote.
“Dodo. Got. to. be. the. dodo,” wrote a person on X.
Others were more cautious. “I am assuming they are doing some sort of analysis on the risks and consequences of reintroducing a new predator to an ecosystem,” warned another person.
“Hopefully not the velociraptor,” a person wrote.
According to CNN, the dire wolf scientists say they brought back the species by using “ancient DNA, cloning, and gene-editing technology to alter the genes of a gray wolf.”
