Driver dies when vehicle plunges from downtown Topeka’s Polk-Quincy Viaduct

A driver was killed early April 5 when a vehicle plunged from an area that was blocked off and under construction on Interstate 70’s Polk-Quincy Viaduct in Topeka, authorities said.

The name, age and gender of the victim weren’t being released Saturday morning pending notification of next of kin.

Topeka police Lt. Ron Ekis said in a news release: “On April 5, 2025, at approximately 1:29 a.m. emergency responders received information about a vehicle that had driven off the I-70 overpass near 2nd and S. Kansas Ave. The motorist was driving on a portion of the interstate that was blocked off and under construction.”

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene, Ekis said.

“No other vehicles were involved, and the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle,” he said.

No further information was being made public.

A driver was killed early April 5 when a vehicle plunged off an Interstate 70 overpass near S. 2nd and Kansas Avenue, Topeka police said.

The crash came at a time when the Kansas Department of Transportation recently initiated a three-year project through which it is replacing and realigning the viaduct,  an aging, elevated four-lane segment of I-70 that runs between S.W. Polk and S.E. Quincy streets.
