Georgia Southern’s live eagle mascot, Freedom, has passed away after 20 years as the school’s beloved mascot, the school announced Saturday.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved live bald eagle mascot, Freedom,” the school said on social media. “For more than two decades, Freedom has served as a symbol of pride for Georgia Southern, uniting Eagle Nation.”
Freedom became Southern’s mascot in 2004 after a rescue effort after being knocked out of a nest in Maitland, Florida. An injured beak prevented his release back into the wild.

“He was acquired with the permission of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service,” the school said. “Since then, Freedom has awed, inspired and helped teach generations about the importance of wildlife, endangered species and conservation.
“Thank you for inspiring us, Freedom. Soar beyond.”
Georgia Southern football coach Clay Helton had a heartfelt post Saturday on X, formerly Twitter, saying he was heartbroken for Wildlife Center executive director, Steven Hein, who cared for Freedom.
“Heartbroken for Steve Hein and all of Eagle Nation. Freedom represented everything that is great about Georgia Southern,” Helton said. “Seeing him fly under blue skies at Paulson will forever be etched in my memory. Thank you Freedom for being a part of our family.”
